Merseysides long awaited ice rink is set to open in Widnes.
Silver Blades will operate the complex at the £10 million Hive Leisure Park in Earl Road besides Widnes Superbowl, The Reed Cinema, Nando’s, Frankie and Benny’s, Premier Inn and Brewers Fayre restaurant.
I am familiar with the company Silver Blades, which operated in Liverpool, Kensington for a number of years.
The ice hockey team, Liverpool Leopards originated there having had American and Canadian World War II pilots from Burtonwood establish the team as a recreational activity home from home.
It is here that I learn’t the game along with speed skating; a skill I have never lost and one which my daughter picked up night after night at the Christmas Liverpool Chavasse Park Liverpool One mini-rink.
Mini-rink no more now!
The Silver Blades, Widnes rink will be like their sister rinks at Altrincham, Cannock and Gillingham.
Silver Blades plans to introduce ice-hockey, sledge hockey, a speed skating club, parent and toddler sessions, and skating lessons for children and adults.
This will be a great venue for schools or corporate meetings with management bonding sessions perhaps or just another place to meet up for some fun and learn a new skill in the company of friends.
This should prove to be a very popular holiday time sporting and recreational venture surrounded by eateries guarenteed to make it a night. With Christmas vast approaching, it will certainly put the snowflakes on the pudding for a festive Christmas.
Halton have really pulled all the stops out on this one and given the opportunity through a variety of courses, for everyone to skate; the unemployed, people with learning disabilities, young mums, children and teenagers.
It’s also the first ice rink built in the UK to sledge hockey international standards; with Matt Lloyd one of Silver Blades head staff and a former Paralympian member of the GB sledge hockey team leading the way.
This is going to be a great success!
