Magic of the Musicals – Lerner and Loewe Favourites – Philharmonic Hall Liverpool

Went to see this on Thursday July 14th. A really romantic evening of great songs from My Fair Lady, Brigadoon, Camelot, Gigi and Paint Your Wagon. The RLPO was again beautifully conducted by John Wilson and great singing performances from Anthony Andrews, Kim Criswell, Annalene Beechey and Brent Barrett.

Great renditions of The Night they Invented Champagne and How to Handle a Woman (still haven’t managed this yet!) and many songs new to me particularly from Brigadoon. The stand out performer for me was Annalene Beechey with a spirited and punchy Just You Wait, ‘enry ‘iggins from My Fair Lady.

The songs played in minor keys gave them a melancholic feel which was perfect for the subject matter, all about love and dreamy desire.

Just one note of disappointment, though, and it was nothing to do with the performances. The average age of the audience must have been about 70! Nothing wrong with this in itself, there was a full house, but the age profile of classical concerts seems much lower with many 20-30 year olds in the audience. Surely music from the musicals can be marketed at a younger age group as well as a more mature one?

Looking forward to John Wilson next visit to the Phil!

My Score – 4/5
